What is a geographical indication?

A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place.

Geographical Indications are part of the intellectual property rights that comes under the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property. A Geographical Indication (GI) is registered for an initial period of ten years, which may be renewed from time to time.

Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property

The Paris Convention, adopted inĀ 1883, applies to industrial property in the widest sense, including patents, trademarks, industrial designs, utility models, service marks, trade names, geographical indications and the repression of unfair competition. This international agreement was the first major step taken to help creators ensure that their intellectual works were protected in other countries.

The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999 governs the registration of geographical indications in India. The Geographical Indications Registry is situated at Chennai.
Agricultural items, food items, wine and spirit drinks, handicrafts, and industrial products are all examples of geographical indicators.
